  1. Whole argument between Charles and Adam about seasons, Foster says seasons are never just seasons. Why does Charles relate to one season and Adam relates to the other?
Charles says what the “hell are you talking about...” about Adam’s restlessness, strength=satisfaction Charles connects with Winter because its strength, Adam wants to be summer and relax
Winter is a stillness which is like Charles where as Adam is restless like the summer
Adam is a fan of things speeding by, Charles likes things to be routine
Lots of arguing and restlessness that feeds off of each other. What is the significance of having discontentment
Back to story of Cain and Abel, and Abel lived. They still love eachother but there is something that is still getting at them
There is friction between them that creates the characters. “This is my place as much as it is yours” Shows his personality
Relates to the Bible, Cain will always live with restlessness, because they are both alive they both have to live with that restlessness
Why is Adam more restless when Cain is the restless one in the bible?
Relates back to good and evil. Adam has 4 eggs and Charles has 3 eggs, being good takes more energy
Adam has a conscious so he can’t be as content with where he is because he knows that there is more out there
Maybe he is trying to establish a gray zone, there isn’t an all good and all bad. We have things we do and don’t like about each character. Shows that even in a story like Cain and Abel with good and bad there is a gray zone.
There is a lot of gray with in the sory. It is between good and evil and light and dark
Still a distinct difference between them. Strange relationship between them, very strained but still brotherly. Charles relies on Adam
I think it's odd how they can just leave. He comes back and is washing stuff in the sink. How can you just come back 8 months later
Connects to the prodigal son. 2 brothers one goes astray and leaves one brother and father. He comes back and the father welcomes him all the same. Shows unconditional love. Shows the brothers characters and the gray area because Charles keeps welcoming Adam back.
What if thats the restlessness that keeps coming back to Charles when Adam returns
With the prodigal son, the son that stayed is jealous of the fact that the other son left and gets treated well when the first son stayed behind. Perhaps this is Charles jealousy
Charles doesn’t understand why Adam wouldn’t want to work on the farm. This is where the tension is from. There is also tension in whether what their father did is wrong. Adam thinks their father is right, but doesn’t love him. Charles is opposite and Charles doesn’t get it.
He was wandering because he didn’t have routine. Has a chance to have a routine again and follow Charles. Is the farm really where Charles wants to be? Charles feels that he owes something to Adam and to the farm. This is why he tries so hard to make it better.
Back to Cain and Abel. He can’t be on his own due to guilt.
Letter that Charles wrote to Adam (Page 38). He said he wanted to go away. Why is he now so stuck on his routine
The house is a symbol of Charles feeling. The farm is better when Charles is there. HE also doesn’t understand why he didn’t value his father’s love
He is trying to make up for the lack of his father’s love
Working of the guilt he’s had since his father died, and he doesn’t understand why Adam doesn’t feel guilty and doesn’t stay at the farm to work off that debt
He also has not let anything go. He still works on the farm. Adam let things go and grew up, but Charles has never grown up the farm is a way of holding on to the past

  2. Charles still thinks he wants to be better than Adam. His ability to work hard and get up early is something where he is still better than Adam at stuff
Argument between Charles and Adam. Charles threatens to burn Adam’s house down. References to Cathy and how the two might have a connection from that
Page 105 Adam is talking about the prostitute that he like. “We piled them up like they were logs...” then he says you’re burning that bacon. Went from humans to bacons without even batting an eye. They both are dehumanizing other people and distancing themselves from others feeling anyone who is below them is like an animal
    What does fire symbolise?
It's a baptism or a rebirth. The prostitute was in a life she was killed and burned and was onto something else
Lots of parallels, Cathy--> Catherine Amesbury like Charles and Adam are both within Cathy. Lots of foreshadowing in their ability to meet Cathy.

    Wrap-up
Cathy and Charles are on opposite sides of the spectrum Cathy doesn’t care about human emotion and Charles does. Both extremes which make them the monsters.
Everytime Adam comes back, Charles get worse. Adam is good so why is he making Charles worse.
Contrast between Adam and Charles, And Mr. Edwards and Cathy. Adam doesn’t suspect Charles because he didn’t love him. Edwards doesn’t want to suspect Cathy why.
The fact that Adam can keep coming back shows absolute power for Adam
Adam in the biblical story is dead and Adam is the restlessness
I like the point about the fire being a rebirth. What did it mean that it was an accident that Mr. Edwards didn’t kill her
How we saw Mr. Edwards at the end vs. beginning of the chapter. Can’t control aggressive tendencies vs. family man
    Gray zone with the characters
Like what he‘s doing with the emotion of love
Do you owe the state if it’s an unjust law when you are punished?
Brothers relationship and the power between them. Charles welcomes Adam back, but Adam listens
    Familiar to siblings in college
First of Cathy’s dialogue is very harsh words
Very clear that Cathy is good with men and using them to her advantage. Charles and Adam are both looking for companionship, show parallels.
Mr. Edwards just randomly new where to bring Cathy and can’t be a coincidence
Good detail of how seductive and beautiful Cathy is, Mr. Edwards has seen so many and yet Cathy blows him away
How much friction between Adam and Charles is a metaphor for a magnet like opposites attract
Are you naturally born a killer. Nature vs. Nurture
Moved up the little garden in front. Connection between cathy and satan
Adam and Charles relationship with they’re leaving
What do you think Charles’ scar represents.
