Timshel: September 21, 2018

Focus: How does the concept of "timshel" free the characters?

1. Warming up with a mini-write on two Adam and Cathy scenes: 199-200 and 322-323
  • What has shifted?
  • How does Steinbeck depict that shift?
  • Why has this shift happened? How does it contribute to the meaning of the work as a whole?
2. Enjoying a big Socratic seminar on Chapters 22-30

3. Wrapping up with remaining questions, epiphanies, and kudos

  1. Socratic:
Timshel - why is it so important? (page 301)
    Thou mayest, obtained, gain control
Listed three times in the Bible
    Indicates choice in the book
Adam appears to be choosing his own path
Timshel plays a role in the twins. The readers are left wondering which path the twins will choose.
Caleb realized that he has the ability to choose to be good even though the reader assumes that he will choose the path of evil.
“Thou mayest” creates many interpretations, an “open door”
Cal and Aron kill the rabbit. Could this indicate the death of Cathy?
The description of the rabbit was similar to the description of Cathy.
Lee is a great example of timshel. Lee is able to take the opportunities that he is given. He does not have to be like the people from his home.
Parallels between Caleb and Aron and Charles and Adam.
Caleb prays to the Lord that he does not want to be evil.
Caleb is manipulative like Cathy. However, he has feeling and he wants to be good. Cathy does not care for others. Caleb loves people (ex: his brother, Aron)
Caleb was named after the biblical character Caleb. There are differences between Cal and the biblical character Caleb. He appears to reject his name “Caleb” and instead chooses to go by “Cal.”
Caleb (biblical) was destined for the promise land.
Cal wants to be redeemed and does not want to follow the same path as Cathy and Charles
Names have power. The meaning of the names are significant to the actual character.
    Adam visits Cathy:
Samuel gave Adam the power to eliminate the demon in Cathy (Samuel seen as a christ-like figure)
Adam became more involved and aware of his sons
Drinking is Cathy’s weakness. Alcohol in the novel can foreshadow events that occur with Cathy.
What does alcohol symbolize? It appears to impact the characters differently
    3 types: Rum, wine, Lee’s alcohol (ng-ka-py)
Causes the characters to view the situation differently
What is the significance of Liza not allowing Samuel to drink?
    Liza is not open minded
    Liza is very guarded
    Medicine and alcohol parallels
Liza drinks alcohol and convinces herself that it is for medical reasons
    The elders using opium
The effect of alcohol on Cathy is the opposite of the effect of alcohol/medicine on any other character. She also uses medicine/poison to gain control of other characters
Some people's poison is medicine but it is opposite when Cathy uses poison
Adam is freeing himself of the temptation of Cathy.
    Wrap-up:
Why did it start raining after Samuel’s death? (Christ-like figure)
Samuel is giving rain to the land just as Christ saved us
Samuel gave Adam the knowledge to help himself and free Cathy
Adam and Eve parallel with Adam and Cathy
    Life came after death
Samuel and his kids represent the fruits of the spirit
Steinbeck’s use of love in the story (Lee’s mother)
Importance of how Steinbeck kills off his characters?
Specifically the death of Charles. How will it affect Adam’s choice of good or evil?
    Lee is underappreciated
Steinbeck mentions folding papers throughout the novel. What is the significance?
Cathy drinks and becomes her true self
How do you pronounce Lee’s drink?
Why else did Adam love Charles?
Abra? What is the significance of her? Effect in the future?
    Scars and love parallels
Timshel is the ladder to the stars
    Samuel in the sky
